I could be wrong, but I understood that this only affected some builds of 6.1 and 6.5, and even seemed to be telco-related in some cases... it certainly wasn't widespread. There is a suggestion that it comes from the date ticking over into Jan 1, 2010 (ie 010110) being mis-interpreted at a ROM level as binary for 16... Either way, the same problem has affected some Australian EFTPOS terminals. Good further reading here and here.
